Beyond the Frame

Photography has long been understood as a medium for documenting and representing reality. Today, however, as our transition into the digital environment continues, images no longer capture and document specific moments, but exist as flowing data, which is produced, replicated and circulated through algorithms. Artist Gyutae Hwang’s photography has constantly enquired into the structure and substance of the “image” itself, going beyond simple documentation or portrayal of it.

Under these contemporary conditions, the exhibition Beyond the Frame revisits the foundations of the photographic medium. Rather than the question of “what one puts in the frame,” it asks “how the frame works.” Hwang was an artist who doubted the stability of the photographic medium early in the history of Korean photography. Though he started out on the documentary photography scene during the 1960s, he treated the photograph not as evidence of fact, but as a structural device. In this case the photograph no longer presupposes a single point of view. The image is deconstructed and reassembled, thus revealing reality as a composed scene. The artist’s montages were an attempt to disrupt the authority of the image and the mythology of representation, going beyond the technical aspect of “synthesized” imagery.

Such awareness became even more radical in the digital environment. Hwang’s PIXEL Series reduced images down to their smallest units of composition, thus transforming familiar forms into sets of data. The colors filling the picture-plane do not indicate specific subjects, but rather expose the mechanism of the image. What are we looking at? Is it a subject, information, or just difference in resolution? Here the pixel ceases to exist as a technical unit, and becomes a conceptual device revealing the conditions of visual experience.

Though the artist’s montage works and pixel series were produced during different time periods, they both brought the structure of the image to the fore. While one shook up the order of representation in the analog era, the other has deconstructed the materiality of the image in the digital age. These two axes exist on a continuum, not in disconnection, and demonstrate the consistent attitude of the artist, who has contemplated persistently on post-photography. The exhibition Beyond the Frame is a contemporary proposal, asking what artistic possibilities lie in photography, in an era when images are overproduced and boundaries between truth and fiction are blurred. Viewers are not limited to the position of “reading” the works. They are invited to participate as subjects who perceive picture structures, recompose deconstructed units, and generate meaning on their own.

To transcend the frame is to reassign a media-critical attitude, which Hwang has also maintained for decades, to today’s visual environment. Instead of fixing photography as a single genre, we require a perspective that recognizes it as a visual system being endlessly recomposed and updated. Based on this perspective, the artist’s works can be read not as past experiments, but as proactive questions that have foreseen the contemporary environment of images.

Standing before the picture-planes of an artist who was the first to live the “photograph after the photograph,” we find ourselves asking: Are we looking at the image, or are we within the perception designed by the image? Not postponing this question, the exhibition shakes up the act of seeing, while functioning as a device for renewed contemplation.

사진은 오랫동안 현실을 기록하고 재현하는 매체로 이해되어 왔다. 그러나 디지털 환경으로 이행한 오늘날, 이미지는 더이상 특정 순간을 채집하고기록하는 것이 아니라, 생산되고, 복제되며, 알고리즘을 통해 순환하는 데이터의 흐름으로 존재한다. 황규태의 사진은 단순히 ‘이미지’를 기록하거나 표현하는 것을 넘어, 이미지 자체의 구조와 실체에 대해 끊임없이 질문해 왔다.

Beyond the Frame 전은 이러한 동시대적 조건 속에서 사진의 매체적 기반을 다시 질문하는 전시이다. 프레임 안에 ‘무엇을 담는가’가 아니라, 그 프레임이 ‘어떻게 작동하는가’를 묻는다. 황규태는 한국 사진사에서 일찍이 매체의 안정성을 의심한 작가이다. 1960 년대 다큐멘터리 사진의 현장에서 출발했지만, 그는 사진을 사실의 증거가 아닌 구조적 장치로 다루었다. 이때 사진은 더이상 단일한 시점을 전제하지 않는다. 이미지는 해체되고 재조합 되며, 현실은 구성된 장면으로 드러난다. 그의 몽타주는 ‘합성’이라는 기술적 차원을 넘어, 이미지의 권위와 재현의 신화를 교란하는 시도였다.

이 문제의식은 디지털 환경에서 더욱 급진화 된다. 픽셀 시리즈는 이미지를 구성하는 최소 단위로 환원함으로써, 우리가 인식해온 형상을 데이터의 집합으로 전환시킨다. 화면을 채우는 색면은 구체적인 대상을 지시하기보다, 이미지가 작동하는 방식을 노출한다. 우리는 무엇을 보고 있는가? 대상인가, 정보인가, 아니면 해상도의 차이일 뿐인가? 픽셀은 더이상 기술적 단위가 아니라, 시각 경험의 조건을 드러내는 개념적 장치가 된다.

몽타주 작업과 픽셀 시리즈는 서로 다른 시기의 결과물이지만, 공통적으로 이미지의 구조를 전면화 한다. 하나는 아날로그 시대에 재현의 질서를 흔들었고, 다른 하나는 디지털 시대에 이미지의 물질성을 해체한다. 이 두 축은 단절이 아닌 연속선 위에 놓여 있으며, 사진 이후의 사진(post-photography)을 사유해온 작가의 일관된 태도를 보여준다. Beyond the Frame 전은 이미지가 과잉 생산되고 진실과 허구의 경계가 흐려진 시대에 사진이 어떤 예술적 가능성을 가질 수 있는지를 묻는 동시대적 제안이다. 관람자는 작품을 ‘읽는’ 위치에 머무르지 않는다. 화면의 구조를 인식하고, 해체된 단위를 재구성하며, 스스로 의미를 생성하는 주체로 참여하게 된다.

프레임을 넘어선다는 것은, 황규태가 수십 년간 지속해온 매체 비판적 태도를 현재의 시각 환경 속으로 다시 재배치하는 일이다. 사진을 하나의 장르로 고정하는 대신, 끊임없이 재구성되고 업데이트되는 시각적 시스템으로 바라보는 관점. 그 안에서 그의 작업은 과거의 실험이 아니라, 동시대 이미지 환경을 예견해온 선행적 질문으로 읽힌다.

사진 이후의 사진을 가장 먼저 살아낸 그의 화면 앞에서 질문하게 된다. 이미지를 보고 있는가, 아니면 이미지가 설계한 인식 속에 있는가. 전시는 이 질문을 유예하지 않으며, 보는 행위를 흔들고, 다시 사유하게 만드는 장치로 작동한다.

Artist

Gyutae Hwang(b.1938~) was born in Yesan, Chungcheongnam-do. After graduating from the Department of Political Science at Dongguk University, he began his professional career as a photojournalist at Kyunghyang Shinmun, which led him to fully pursue the path of a photographic artist. He initially started with documentary photography, focusing on recording reality. Over time, however, his practice shifted toward what came to be known as “New Photography,” experimenting with the materiality and structure of images through techniques such as collage, montage, film burning, and multiple exposure. Since the 1990s, with the advent of the digital environment, his work has further evolved into an exploration of the pixel, the smallest unit of the image, continuing to this day through ongoing experimentation.

황규태(b.1938~)는 충남 예산에서 태어나 동국대학교 정치학과를 졸업한 후 경향신문사 사진기자를 거치며 본격적으로 사진작가의 길로 들어섰다. 초기에는 현실을 기록하는 다큐멘터리 사진 작업에서 출발했으나, 이후 콜라주, 합성, 필름버닝, 다중노출 등 이미지의 물질성과 구조 자체를 실험하는 뉴포토그래피 작업으로 이동했다. 1990년대 이후에는 디지털 환경의 도래와 함께 이미지의 최소 단위인 ‘픽셀’에 대한 탐구로 이어지며, 현재까지 끊임없는 시도와 실험을 지속하고 있다
