Gyutae Hwang’s solo exhibition Beyond the Frame expands photography beyond a medium of representation into a question of structure and perception, fundamentally reexamining how images are constructed and understood.

황규태 개인전 Beyond the Frame은 사진을 재현의 매체가 아닌 구조와 인식의 문제로 확장하며, 이미지가 구성되고 이해되는 방식을 근본적으로 다시 묻는 전시이다.







Gyutae Hwang’s solo exhibition Beyond the Frame examines the structural nature of images through the artist’s ongoing expansion of photography’s boundaries. His montage works disrupt the premise of photographic representation by combining disparate images, while the Pixel series reduces images to their minimal units, revealing the process through which visual information is constructed. These works shift photography toward questions of perception and cognition, ultimately prompting a reconsideration of what we see and how we understand images within the contemporary visual environment.


황규태 개인전 Beyond the Frame은 사진의 경계를 지속적으로 확장해온 작가의 실험을 통해, 이미지가 단순한 기록이 아니라 구성되고 해체되며 재조직되는 구조적 체계임을 탐구하는 전시이다. 몽타주 작업은 서로 다른 이미지를 결합하며 재현이라는 사진의 전제를 흔들고, 픽셀 시리즈는 이미지를 최소 단위로 환원함으로써 시각 정보가 형성되는 과정을 드러낸다. 이러한 작업은 사진을 감각과 인식의 문제로 전환시키며, 동시대 이미지 환경 속에서 우리가 무엇을 보고 어떻게 이해하는지를 다시 질문하도록 이끈다.








The image is deconstructed and reassembled, thus revealing reality as a composed scene.

이미지는 해체되고 재조합 되며, 현실은 구성된 장면으로 드러난다.










To transcend the frame is to reassign a medium-critical attitude, which Hwang has also maintained for decades, to today’s visual environment.

프레임을 넘어선다는 것은, 황규태가 수십 년간 지속해온 매체 비판적 태도를 현재의 시각 환경 속으로 다시 재배치하는 일이다.







Standing before the picture-planes of an artist who was the first to live the “photograph after the photograph”,
we find ourselves asking:  Are we looking at the image, or are we within the perception designed by the image?

사진 이후의 사진을 가장 먼저 살아낸 그의 화면 앞에서 질문하게 된다. 이미지를 보고 있는가, 아니면 이미지가 설계한 인식 속에 있는가.
