UNAW Gallery is pleased to present a focused presentation of Gyutae Hwang (b. 1938–), a pioneering artist in the development of experimental photography and image-based practices in Korea, in the Spotlight section of Frieze Seoul. Bringing together key works from the 1960s to the 2000s, the booth traces Hwang’s evolution from straight photography to some of the most radical investigations of image construction, transformation, and reproduction in postwar Korea.
UNAW Gallery는 Frieze Seoul 2026에서 이미지를 독립적인 탐구 대상으로 삼아 사진의 관습적 경계를 확장해온 황규태 (b. 1938– )의 주요 작업을 선보인다. 지난 반세기 동안 황규태는 사진을 재현의 도구가 아닌 이미지를 사유의 매체로 다루며, 이미지의 생성과 변형, 재구성의 원리를 지속적으로 실험해왔다. 그는 한국 실험사진의 형성과 전개를 이끈 선구자이자, 사진을 동시대 미술의 담론으로 확장한 대표적인 작가로 평가받는다.
전시는 1960년대부터 2000년대에 이르는 시대별 대표작을 통해 사진의 재현적 기능을 넘어 이미지의 구조와 물질성, 그리고 생성 방식을 탐구해온 작가의 실천을 조망한다. 아날로그 사진에서 디지털 이미지에 이르기까지 황규태는 이미지를 하나의 독립적인 시각 체계이자 사유의 대상으로 다루며, 오늘날의 시각적 환경을 관통하는 문제의식을 선취적으로 제시해 왔다.
