Curatorial Essay:
Untitled, Ongoing

Historically, painting has been understood as a medium released into the world as a "completed result" the moment the artist's brush stops and the frame is mounted. Yet, can the world upon the canvas ever reach a definitive end? Sukhyung Kang's solo exhibition, Untitled, Ongoing, departs precisely from this fundamental doubt. Moving away from the convention of presenting painting as a visual conclusion, this exhibition proposes viewing the canvas as an endlessly vibrating state of incompleteness—a medium of continuous process.

A Instinctive Trajectory Beyond Representation

In front of Kang's canvases, the question of "what is depicted" loses its force. For the artist, painting is not a tool for representation that plausibly transfers external reality onto the surface. Rather than a stage for executing meticulous plans, the canvas serves as a physical trajectory where the most primal, bodily act of "drawing" collides and accumulates.

On the surface, layers of relentless performance—painting over, erasing, scraping, and letting colors bleed—take precedence over any urge to construct recognizable forms. In this process, pigment sheds its descriptive role, uniting as a raw physical material with the artist's bodily rhythm. These traces, ceaselessly traversing creation and erasure, do not charge toward a predetermined destination; instead, they expose the canvas's raw mechanism of breathing and asserting its own existence.

A Density Born of Unconscious and Emotional Collision

The resulting canvas emanates an explosive, highly dense visual energy marked by freedom and raw instinct. The surface, entangled with unrefined lines and fragmented drawing marks, may appear abstract at first glance, yet it carries an intensely real and psychological temperature beneath.

Kang neither suppresses nor glosses over the anxiety, deficiency, and rebellious energy he confronts in daily reality. Instead, he allows fleeting impulses and unconscious choices to remain and overlap on the canvas. Consequently, what the viewer encounters is not a neatly polished image, but a vibrant, pulsing record of the artist's intense psychological fluctuations frozen in time.

The Unnamable, the Continuous Present

The title Untitled, Ongoing—a motif Kang has persistently maintained—serves as a clear declaration of his artistic stance. Stripping away the title (Untitled) reflects a conscious effort to resist fixing the artwork within linguistic or narrative boundaries, keeping interpretation perpetually open. Furthermore, Ongoing asserts that this state of indeterminacy is not a temporary phase awaiting completion, but the essential temporality of painting itself—one that constantly renews and expands.

This exhibition lays out the artist's recent trajectory from 2024 through 2026. Rather than a showcase for finished products, the gallery functions as an archive capturing a state of "still being painted." Viewers are invited to shift from passive observers of static objects to participants traversing the temporal flow of painting, where forms continually dissolve and re-emerge.

Ultimately, Sukhyung Kang's practice does not aim for a final destination. In the turbulent process of becoming—within that open, unresolved space—his painting finds its most vivid resonance.

Untitled, Ongoing
