Curatorial Essay:
When Silence Builds I 고요의 층위
In the landscapes we pass by every day, traces of emotion remain—traces that cannot be fully explained through language. UNAW Gallery’s exhibition When Silence Builds: The Strata of Stillness begins by tracing these invisible emotional textures. It closely examines the structure formed by the interplay of human, space, and time, translating the sensorial experience that lingers in the aftermath of events into visual language. Within scenes where meaning seems to have vanished, viewers encounter subtle layers of feeling that quietly vibrate beneath the surface.
Jieun Lee’s paintings are less about depicting the world through representation than about following the traces of emotion it leaves behind. She captures the grain of still time, shaping the sensation of “silence” through gestures of paint and resonances of color. Rather than presenting a single image, her works invite the viewer to experience the flow of emotion that permeates each scene.
Painting as a Structure of Sensation
Lee’s practice focuses not on narrative events, but on the sensations that remain after their absence. Anonymous figures, static architectures, and blurred objects populate her canvases, yet none assert their own meaning. Instead, they reflect one another, forming a dense field of sensory tension. For Lee, painting is not a medium of depiction but a structure that reveals the delicate interplay between human and space, tension and stillness, and the sedimented layers of time in between.
This structure acts as a device for perceiving the flow of emotion. Linear time dissolves and reassembles as emotional residue. Figures merge into landscapes, spaces transform into sites of memory, and time expands or contracts along its own grain. The relationship between light and emptiness becomes a rhythm that modulates the temperature of feeling, while quiet layers of sensation accumulate across the painted surface.

Still Architecture — The Place of Emotion
The Still Architecture series is a key to understanding Lee’s world. Through urban buildings, windows, walls, and structural rhythms, she paints the spaces where events have already disappeared. Here, architecture becomes more than a physical form—it transforms into a vessel for emotion.
Grids, shadows, and wall surfaces generate visual rhythms that serve as the framework of feeling. By omitting or decentralizing figures, Lee amplifies a “stillness without event.” This stillness is not emptiness but the residue of concentrated emotion and time. Within these static spaces, color and form are compressed; subdued tones evoke the blur of memory, and softened edges recall the lingering trace of emotion.
For Lee, stillness is not absence but fullness. When architectural structures stand most quietly, they contain the densest accumulation of time and feeling. Through her painterly density, the artist translates that saturation into a visual experience—inviting viewers to feel time rather than simply see it.

Between Human and Landscape
Lee’s figures exist not at the center but in the margins. A back view, a pause in motion, a figure seated on a bench—these are gestures that convey emotional states rather than narrative events. The artist approaches the human not as the subject of a story, but as a presence dissolved into the landscape. As a result, her compositions sustain a subtle tension between figuration and environment, allowing viewers to encounter a kind of familiar strangeness within stillness.
Figures and spaces reflect each other; the plane of architecture, the trace of a body, and the passage of light interweave. The gaze drifts naturally toward the periphery rather than a fixed center. This visual structure shifts the viewer’s attention from what is seen to where one dwells. Through this question, Lee prompts us to reconsider how we experience the world through memory.
The Grain of Time, the Pulse of Emotion
The Bloom in the Night series reveals Lee’s temporal consciousness. Here, time operates not linearly but as density—a nonmaterial structure where layers of emotion and memory accumulate. Lee sets dreams as sensory landscapes in which the past and present, the real and imagined, coexist. The recurring motif of the “flower” symbolizes the condensation of emotional time, while the diffusion of light and color, the soft curves, and the blurred contours become devices that visualize emotional resonance.
The pictorial rhythm of Bloom in the Night differs from the logic of the real world. Light flows between objects, forms emerge from emptiness, and the viewer’s gaze moves along the “grain” of time rather than its line. For Lee, the dream space is where emotion exists in its purest state, and painting becomes the medium that makes its amplitude visible. Ultimately, this series is an inquiry into how painting can construct the “time of emotion,” translating the traces of what has vanished—but still remains—into a visual order.

This exhibition brings together three sensory structures—space, human, and time—into a single convergence. Urban architecture forms the structure of stillness; traces of human presence become residues of emotion; dreamlike scenes expand into waves of time. Across these axes, “silence” emerges not as the absence of sound, but as the totality of perception. Through painting, Lee visualizes the moment when silence is built—when memory and emotion coalesce into a single structure.

정지된 건축, 감정의 장소
〈Still Architecture〉 시리즈는 이지은의 세계를 읽는 핵심적인 키워드입니다. 작가는 도시의 오래된 건축물, 창과 벽, 구조의 리듬을 통해 ‘사건이 사라진 자리’를 그립니다. 이때의 건축은 물리적 구조물이 아니라, 감정이 머무는 장소로 전환됩니다.
건축의 격자, 빛의 그림자, 벽의 표면은 반복되는 시각적 리듬을 통해 감정의 골격으로 작용합니다. 그는 인물을 배제하거나 주변화하며 ‘사건 없는 정적’을 극대화합니다. 이는 단순한 침묵이 아니라, 감정이 농축된 시간의 잔류입니다. 정지된 공간 속에서 색과 형태는 압축되고, 낮은 채도의 색감은 기억의 흐릿함을, 부드러운 윤곽은 감정의 잔향을 환기시킵니다.
이지은에게 고요함은 부재가 아닌 충만입니다. 건축의 구조가 단단히 멈춰 있을 때, 그 안에는 오히려 가장 많은 감정과 시간이 응축되어 있습니다. 작가는 그 농도를 회화적 밀도로 번역하며, 관람자가 그 표면을 바라보는 동안 자신도 모르게 ‘시간을 느끼는’ 경험을 하도록 만듭니다.
인간과 풍경의 관계
이지은의 인물들은 중심이 아니라 여백 속에 존재합니다. 뒷모습, 걸음, 벤치에 앉은 순간 등은 구체적 이야기보다 감정의 상태를 전달하기 위한 장치로 작동합니다. 그는 인간을 서사의 주체로 제시하기보다, 풍경 속에 스며든 존재로 다룹니다. 그 결과 화면은 ‘인물화’와 ‘풍경화’의 경계에서 미묘한 긴장을 유지하며, 관람자는 그 정적 속에서 익숙한 낯섦을 경험합니다.
인물과 공간은 서로를 비추는 관계로 존재합니다. 건축의 면과 인물의 기척, 빛의 흐름이 맞물리며, 시선은 자연스럽게 특정한 중심 대신 주변으로 흘러갑니다. 이러한 시각적 구조는 관람자가 ‘무엇을 본다’기보다 ‘어디에 머무는가’를 질문하도록 만듭니다. 작가는 그 질문을 통해, 우리가 기억 속에서 세계를 어떻게 체험하고 있는지를 되묻습니다.
시간의 결, 감정의 파동
〈Bloom in the Night〉 시리즈는 이지은 회화의 시간적 사유를 보여줍니다. 여기서 시간은 직선이 아니라 밀도로 작동하며, 감정과 기억이 층층이 쌓인 비물질적 구조로 표현됩니다. 작가는 꿈을 하나의 감각적 장소로 설정하고, 그 안에서 과거와 현재, 현실과 상상이 중첩되는 상태를 그립니다. ‘꽃’의 형상은 이 시간적 감정의 응축을 상징하는 모티프로 등장하며, 빛과 색의 번짐, 부드러운 곡선, 불분명한 윤곽은 감정의 파동을 시각화하는 장치가 됩니다.
〈Bloom in the Night〉의 화면은 현실의 질서와 다른 리듬으로 움직입니다. 빛이 사물 사이를 흐르고, 여백에서 형태가 발생하며, 관람자는 시간의 직선이 아닌 ‘결’을 따라 시선을 이동하게 됩니다. 작가에게 이 꿈의 공간은 감정이 가장 순수한 상태로 존재하는 곳이며, 회화는 그 감정의 진폭을 가시화하는 매체입니다. 결국 이 시리즈는 회화가 어떻게 ‘감정의 시간’을 구축할 수 있는지를 탐구하는 실험이자, 사라졌으나 여전히 남아 있는 감정의 흔적을 시각적 질서로 번역하는 시도입니다.
